The Family Room. Cambridge Dictionary describes the family room as a room in a family's home that is used for relaxing, especially watching television. It is the perfect place to have a family movie night, watch a favorite TV show, or even cherished family home videos. At the center of the family room you will find the entertainment unit. In terms of design it can be the focal point of the family room. It is so important to select an entertainment unit that is practical and beautiful for such an important space in your home.
You want to find an entertainment unit that can accommodate your television and all accompanying media components, from cable boxes, to game consoles, and even DVDs (if you have not exclusively switched to online streaming). Here are some basic tips that will help you choose the entertainment unit that suits your family room best.
Measure. Measure. Measure.
- Measure your television: the width, the height and the depth. The average TV size measurement is taken diagonally, therefore it is important to know the actual dimensions of your television in order to determine a TV stand that will work. You want to ensure your TV is not wider than the TV stand; at the very least you want a couple of inches on either end of the television's width. You want to measure the height so you can determine the appropriate height of your stand and what viewing height this will create when you are seated. If you do not have a flatscreen television, you want to ensure your TV will fit depth wise on the entertainment unit or TV stand.
- Measure the height of the TV stand: As a general rule of thumb the center of your television should be eye-level when you are seated. You will need to add half of the TV stands height (plus its mount) to the height of your TV stand. If this measurement falls below your seated eye level, you will need a taller TV stand, if it falls above your seated eye level, you will need a shorter TV stand.
Large, Medium or Small Entertainment Units
Entertainment units come in various sizes and styles. For the most enjoyable viewing experience, ensure you choose one that suits your room best, either based on size, style or function.
Large media entertainment units normally feature drawers, shelves and other compartments to conceal all the wires and media components. While entertainment units can look heavy, our Halifax Collection changes things by using a silky sheen paint in bright white and elegantly detailed woodwork. The result is a design that is fresh and clean that will not impose, but it will most definitely be noticed. And with easy cable management, unruly wires will never spoil the look.
As an option, if you prefer a top that exposes its wooden surface, our Halifax Accent TV Stand with 4 Drawers (shop now) features the top in a deep and dark wood stain that bounces the light. We have also distressed the paintwork slightly so it channels a wonderful pre-loved vibe.
